345 - Slapstick
December 5, 2009

Believe it or not, this is based on a true story. Not in our house. Years ago (and I mean like 50+ years ago), when my father was a little boy, he was watching the Three Stooges. Now, I don’t know the particulars if they had a t.v. at the time or if these were the shorts shown in the movie theaters at the time. Either way, my grandfather–my father’s father–loved the Stooges. My grandmother didn’t. She objected to her little boy seeing them. Of course, my grandfather argued there was no harm. That is, until a few days later when he was taking a nap, and my father decided to wake him up with a hammer. Thankfully, because my father was 3-4, he didn’t have the strength to really hurt him, but my grandfather learned a lesson. My father was not allowed to watch the Three Stooges again until he was much older.
I hadn’t thought of this story in years until a few weeks ago. Most of the kids had gone to spend the night at my sister’s house. Jim and I only had 2 of the boys. One of our local channels shows the 3 Stooges every week and we happened to see it on. Monty had never seen them. He was watching and started laughing, saying, “mom, that guy just poked the other guy in the eye.” Monty is a bit older and I was able to explain slapstick to him. Still, it got me thinking of the story of my dad and his father.
We’re still working on our big project, but hope to have it done by Monday. Really keeping our fingers crossed there won’t be too many delays next week on the strip. Though, with us, you never know!
