344- Trouble Ticket 1456

November 27, 2009

Of course, most young people today have never even seen a floppy disk. Or maybe they have, in a museum or something. Folding them in half was a great way to destroy them. Sticking them to the refrigerator with a big magnet was another. Nowadays, of course, we have flash drives, which are pretty much indestructible. I accidentally ran one through the wash once and it came out fine. Modern technology takes the fun out of everything. (Man, I sound like an old fogey!) For the record, the caller in today’s comic was inserting a 5¼” disk into a 3½” drive.

Haha, I somehow get nostalgic over floppy disks. I think I’m one of those lucky ‘young ones’ who got to use floppy disks until around 2004 (way to go for being too old-school) and still got around with using DOS.

More than actually pushing the floppy disks in and out of the caddy, what was more fun for me was destroying a floppy disk with confidential information, upon request by my father. ;D

      Mirz says:

We still have boxes and boxes full of old floppys, along with a few old computers in the basement. If we had more room, we would love to set one up and play some of the old games. Thankfully, most of the old stuff you can get on ROMs and such online, but there is some stuff that can’t be found, so our floppys are the only way to access them.

Jim still has his Apple 2 from when he was a kid. We have boxes of those disks. When our kids look at them, they are simply amazed that *that* is a disk. Even better yet, this past weekend I came up on an old TI-99 game which is on cassette tape. My kids were floored to see that.
