288 - Sorry, Dad

June 19, 2009

Just try explaining the free software movement to anyone who’s not familiar with it. I used to work for a large company, and one day I got into a discussion with one of my bosses about free software. He just couldn’t grasp the concept of somebody doing a large amount of work — for example, the amount of work involved in writing Linux — for no pay. And I wasn’t able to explain it to him.

At least I didn’t get into trouble for stealing any free software. But that conversation was still much of the inspiration for today’s comic.
