Oh goodness. You know, I used to complain about the Cosmic Dungeon strips taking a long time to do! This comic took 6 hours! Granted, at least an hour of that was searching around for some clipart to inspire me. Still, I wanted to have several hippies in there, as well as some women. I wanted to show one of the gnus grilling, which meant creating a little grill. Then there is the little backscene with the fox, which proved to take a bit of time. Plus, I wanted to do a bus/camper. Oh, and those coolers ended up taking a huge amount of time! Why? Sometimes to get something to look good in such a small scale, it takes a lot of time getting the proportions and shading just right.
The “software pirates” storyline was conceived over 2 years ago, when we were just starting the strip. We liked the idea of having pirates in an unconventional manner. Though, since then we’ve had them in a conventional manner as well, in this strip. One of the things we tried not to do is get too preachy on this subject. It was not our intention to make some kind of statement with these strips. It was just a fun idea we wanted to run with. Whatever side of the fence you are on, the real funny thing is that it’s the marriage of both worlds which has really benefitted the computer community. Coders who make their living by day developing commercial products, who in turn spend their nights writing code for free. How cool is that!
Quick note on the Booyah. I ended up doing some smilies for another comic artist over the past week which I wanted to get in for the Booyah. So, we’ll be doing it next week.
